Sponsors? Retreats? Rehearsal? Confirmation is unlike any other time in a young person's life! They're making a commitment to God and his Church through their own desire and will. Whether you're a parent or a sponsor, we'll make sure you have all of the resources you need to help them prepare for Confirmation day and beyond.

Parent Information:

Parents are vitally important to the Confirmation prep process. Prep in a parish setting serves to support the parent as the primary source of catechesis for a confirmation candidate. As such, we encourage parents to get involved on the Confirmation Core Team, and especially by volunteering as a chaperon and catechist on the Confirmation Retreat.

Confirmation Sponsors

Everyone to be confirmed needs a sponsor. You can select your own sponsor or the parish can provide one for you. Consider the following guidelines when choosing a sponsor:

  •  The sponsor represents in a personal way the witness and support of the parish community.

  • Opportunities for catechesis should be offered to the sponsors in order to assist them in fully understanding their role in the ongoing formation of the candidates. Sponsors should make themselves available for such catechesis if necessary.

  • The sponsor should participate with the candidates in their preparation for as well as the celebration of Confirmation.

  • To perform the role of sponsor, it is necessary that a person:

    • Be designated by the one to be confirmed, by the parents or the one who takes their place, or, in their absence, by the pastor or minister and is to have the qualifications and intention of performing the role.

    • Have completed the sixteenth (16) year, unless the pastor concludes that an exception is to be made for a just cause.

    • Be a practicing Catholic who has been confirmed and has already received the sacrament of the Eucharist and leads a life in harmony with faith and the role to be undertaken.

    • If married, must have been married in the Church sacramentally with no outstanding annulments. (Sponsors cannot be remarried outside of the Church.)

    • Not be bound by any canonical penalty legitimately imposed or declared.

    • Not be the father, mother, or spouse of the one to be confirmed.
